Follow along this no-sewing challenge in decorating your Christmas tree with fabric, ribbon and lace. This decor challenge will help you to reuse materials in your sewing room, get your creative juices flowing, and the best part: stay on budget!
In the end you will have created some pretty unique decorations for your home this Christmas. In my tutorial I used silk fabric, velvet ribbons and vintage lace.
I’ve always enjoyed creating a warm and inviting environment in my home year round. The best way I found to do this is by adding that handmade touch somewhere in my decorating. I like to apply this idea of a personal touch to my decorations in all seasons, which always makes our home environment unique and special for my family.
If you love sewing and making crafts like I do then I know you have that box of fabric scraps laying in your garage or sewing room somewhere. This year I wanted to finally use up those scrapes by using them in my seasonal handmade decor.
By tying bows on your Christmas tree and silky hanging strands you too can create this jolly handmade look.
Why you will love this decorating idea:
You are re-using materials: I love reusing decorating materials, I try to use up all my fabric scrap or I’ll save it for another project.
On-budget: Since you are reusing your fabric scrapes, lace and trim. You are saving money. This was the challenge, creating a look with items I already had.
Vintage inspired and whimsical: With handmade decorations you are putting a personal touch to your holiday season which makes it look unique.
Tips for decorating a Christmas tree using fabric scraps and ribbon
- color coordinate your scraps, this way you can add additional trims or ribbon that will tie your look together
- make sure your scraps are about the same length and width, again this will create a cohesive look
- when choosing colors, its fun to put together colors that are contrasting, have fun with it!
- you can totally customize your Christmas tree based on the your style and the scrapes you have, add your left over trim and lace, even pom poms! I added faux fur hat pom poms to mine and it turned out pretty cute!
Tools and Materials:
Fabric Scraps (cut into 2″ wide X about 12″ long strips)
lace trim
pink velvet ribbon 1″ wide
yellow velvet ribbon 1″ wide
light pink ribbon 3″ wide
How to decorate your Christmas tree using fabric scraps and ribbons:
After arranging the lights and your complimentary ornaments (I choose my Ikea gold ornaments that I had from previous years and my faux fur hat pom pops) on your Christmas tree, cut your ribbons, I cut mine into about 12″ strips.
Next I did the same thing with my yellow scrapes of fabric, vintage lace and velvet ribbons . Cut the scrapes into about 2″ wide x 12″ long strips, and the lace and ribbon into about the same length. It helps if the length is the same all around. It creates a beautiful and cohesive look on the Christmas tree.
After cutting everything out I tied the yellow silk strips into bows and the vintage lace and velvet ribbons I left as long hanging strips.
Last step is to add your final touches, such as tinsel or more ribbons. I usually add tinsel but this year I opted out. Remember, less is more. I like to apply this principle of design when I can. No judgement if you like adding more, that works for this tutorial as well!
I have seen some beautifully arranged trees where about every branch is dressed! The secret here is to stay in a color scheme, whether it is contrasting colors, complimentary or monochrome.
The beauty of this tutorial is that you can change it up to match your fabric scraps and your personal style, have fun with it and explore with the materials that are already in your sewing room.
Finally, light up your tree and Viola! You are done, all you have left to do is to lounge back on your couch with a cup of hot cocoa and enjoy the beauty all season long!
